A Word About the Essence of Art

We have probably all heard someone say “Wow! That picture looks exactly like a photo!”. It is true that one has to admit the skill involved in creating such a piece of excellent photography but really, if a photo-perfect image is what is desired, why not just take a photo and be done with it? 

An artist’s interpretation of a subject, especially subjects such as animals and people, is much more than what a camera can capture. True, if laid beside the photo one will see differences but, that is exactly as it should be. A work of art captures something from within the subject and renders it with a living emotion, transmitting life from the heart of the artist. No camera can accomplish this; it can only replicate what the mechanism “sees”. My work strives to see beyond the static image and place within the drawing the personality and spirit of the subject.
